We’ve put together 11 selected routes in Vitosha – from short walks in the forest to long hikes to peaks like Cherni Vrah and Kamen Del. Some are ideal for families with children, others are challenging and suitable for experienced mountaineers.

All routes are also available on Strava where you can easily view, track and follow them with GPS.

Easy hikes

Routes for beginners and children – easy, accessible, and suitable for taking first steps in the mountains. Ideal for family walks and relaxed adventures in nature.

Route 1
A very short, but very pleasant route, allowing for walking with small children. At easy walking it takes no more than 40min. The vertical drop is only 77 meters for the whole route.

Route 2
The route is suitable for a short walk with children. It requires no special equipment and is almost all the time in the forest. It can be walked in 1 hour.

Route 3 – Hike through the huts
Another nice and easy route with a bit more vertical. Suitable for short walks even with children. Passes through several huts in the area where you can take a short break – x. Bor, h. Tintiava, h. Rodina and Momina skala. Then it ends again at the Septemvri hut, where a delicious meal is waiting for you.

Route 4
An easy and pleasant route, entirely in shady forest – ideal for families with children. No steep climbs, with great views on the way to Kopitoto and Momina Skala hut. The whole trek takes about 2-3 hours at a slow and relaxed pace.

Moderate-difficulty hikes

Routes with moderate exertion – for those seeking a balance between physical challenge and the enjoyment of beautiful nature. Suitable for people in good physical condition and families with older children, ready for a bit more adventure amid the quiet of the mountains.

Hike 5 – Boyana Waterfall
This route will take you to one of the most famous natural landmarks of Vitosha — the Boyana Waterfall. The trail to the waterfall is steep and rocky, so it is recommended to wear appropriate hiking footwear. At a relaxed pace, the hike takes no more than 3 hours.

Route 6 – Mount Kikish
This route will take you to the little popular but very beautiful peak “Kikish” from which you can enjoy an amazing panorama of the whole Sofia field. The route passes through the huts and shelters of Momina Skala, Esperanto, Kamen Del and Kikish. With light walking the route should take no more than 4 hours.

Route 7 – through the Peaks
This route will take you to one of the most scenic and hidden trails of Vitosha. In its low part it passes through many beautiful forest paths, passes through the Kikish shelter and after Kikish peak passes through huge passages with stones and goes up to Mt Ushite and Mt Kamen del. The trail is quite technical in places. This route is recommended for better physically fit people. Light walking would take between 5 and 6 hours.

Route 8 – Kamen Del Peak
To Kamen Del peak and back. This route will take you to the most panoramic and perhaps the most visited peak of Vitosha – Kamen Del. From the top you can see a great panorama of the Sofia field and the whole western and central Balkan Mountains. With easy walking the route takes between 3 and 4 hours.

Challenging hikes

For well-prepared and experienced hikers – long treks, demanding ascents, and breathtaking views. These routes will take you to some of the highest and wildest corners of Vitosha, where the effort is rewarded with silence, vast open spaces, and a feeling of complete escape.

Route 9 – Black Rock Peak
This route will take you to one of the little-known peaks in Vitosha, namely the peak of the Black Rock. The last part of the trail before the summit is quite steep, so get ready for an adventure. With gentle walking, the route can be covered in about 4-5 hours.

Route 10 – Gorna Vitosha
Long but quite nice circular route without many steep climbs and descents. It passes through many huts reaching Konyarnika. Most of the route is in the forest part of Vitosha. With light walking it takes about 5-6 hours.

Hike 11
This route is intended for the most seriously prepared hikers or mountain runners. It passes through Konyarnika to reach the highest point of Vitosha – Cherni Vrah Peak. On the way back, it goes via Kamen Del Peak. A well-prepared hiker can complete the route in approximately 7–8 hours.
